今年の選抜には大阪から２校出場する。１校目は中田翔が所属するご存知大阪桐蔭。
そしてもう一校は秋季大阪準優勝の北陽高校である。
近畿大会では報徳学園の前に５－０と完敗したが、３番の上杉、４番の益田を中心に非常に投打のバランスが取れ、中田翔率いる大阪桐蔭のライバルになるのは間違いない。
特に注目すべきは４番の益田で、身長１８３センチ、体重９５キロと中田に勝るとも劣らない体格をしている。
しかも彼は左バッターで北陽の左のバッターで有名だった元オリックスの嘉勢以来の大物だろう。
昨年夏、私はある事情により大阪大会の北陽対履生社戦を見に行ってきた。その時２年生にして
強豪北陽の４番に座っていたのが益田で、見た目でこの選手は打ちそうだと感じた。
益田は体格ににあわず、バットの振りが非常にコンパクトで右に左に広角に打ち分けていた。
おそらく天性の器用さを彼は持っているに違いない。さらに、タイミングが合い、いい感じでスイングできた時は中田翔に見劣りしない打球を打っていた。
技術的な部分で言うと中田翔が２回りほどまだ上を言っているが、益田の才能もかなりのものである。
春の選抜は中田翔対益田の左右のホームラン合戦を見たいと期待している。
